The Filipino people have already spoken the Republic of the Philippines has now new President and Vice President.
Exactly after 30 days from the first Philippine Automated Elections last May 10, 2010 Senator Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay Sr. is now proclaimed today June 9, 2010 after the Joint Session of the Senate and Congress as Philippine President and Vice President respectively.
President Noynoy Aquino will be seated in the Malacañang for six (6) years starting July 1, 2010 until June 30, 2016 (unless there are uncertainties in the future that may change the Philippine Government) same with Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Our responsibility has not ended after we cast our votes in the last May 10 elections it’s also our responsibilities to watch as our newly elected officials do their duties as mandated by our Constitution.
President Powers and duties:
The President id the head of state and government of the Republic of the Philippines. The executive power is vested alone in the Philippines President. Also, the president heads the Executive branch of the government, which includes the Cabinet and all executive departments.
The President is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. As such, he/she can call out such armed forces to prevent or suppress lawless violence, invasion or rebellion, when the public safety requires it, he or she may, for a period not exceeding sixty (60) days, suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus (legal instrument safeguarding individual freedom against arbitrary state action) or place the Philippines or any part thereof under Martial Law or State of Emergency.
Also, the President has the power to grant reprieves, commutations, and pardons.
The President also responsible in appointing members of the Constitutional Commission, Ambassadors, other public minister and consuls, officers of the AFP from the rank of colonel or naval captain, and other officers as vested by the Philippine Constitution.
The President also appoint the members of Supreme Court including the Chief Justice.
Vice President:
Vice President is the second highest executive official of our government. Vice President is the first in the presidential line of succession. The Vice President also becomes the new President upon the death, resignation, or removal by impeachment and subsequent conviction of the President. The Vice President of the Philippines has no official responsibility other than those given by the incumbent President of the Philippines. The tradition is for the Vice President to be given the highest-ranking cabinet portfolio.
